Diabetes And Bone Loss

Having type 2 diabetes can lead to complications like heart disease, eye problems, cognitive decline—and now bone deterioration, according to recent research from the Mayo Clinic.

Using a new tool to make a micro-indentation in the tibia (shin bone), researchers tested the bone quality of 60 postmenopausal women, half of whom had type 2 diabetes. The women with diabetes had significantly more compromised bone material than those without the disease, suggest the findings published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. Poor glucose control with diabetes could be the culprit.
